So you open Google, type in newborn photographer and suddenly there are dozens of options. Different prices, different styles, different packages. And you have no idea where to start.

I am Amanda, a newborn and maternity photographer based in Oran Park, serving families across the Macarthur region including Camden, Campbelltown, Narellan, Gregory Hills, Mount Annan and Leppington.
I want to give you an honest guide to finding the right photographer for your family. Not just the right price. The right fit.
The newborn stage lasts days. The photographs last a lifetime. Getting this choice right matters.
1. Book During Your Pregnancy, Not After
This is the single most important piece of advice I can give you.
Newborn sessions are best captured within the first 10 to 14 days of life. Babies are sleepier, more curly and easier to settle in those early days. After two weeks they become more alert and wakeful which makes certain poses more challenging.
Most photographers in the Macarthur region book out weeks or even months in advance. If you wait until your baby arrives to start looking, you will likely find your preferred photographer is already fully booked for your window.
My advice is to book at around 20 weeks pregnant. Give your due date, secure your booking and then everything is in place ready to go. Once your baby arrives you simply reach out to lock in the exact date.

2. Look at Their Portfolio Honestly
Before you look at price, look at the work. Does the style feel like you? Do the images feel warm, real and emotional or do they feel stiff and overly posed?
Newborn photography in the Macarthur region varies enormously in style. Some photographers work with heavily themed setups and lots of props. My approach is different. I work with warm, soft textures, creamy neutrals and gentle styling that keeps the focus on your baby and your connection rather than the setup around them.
The result is images that feel timeless. Not trend-driven, not heavily edited, not something that will feel dated in five years. Just honest, emotive photographs of the people you love most in the world.
Ask yourself: can I picture this image on my wall in ten years? If the answer is yes, you are looking at the right photographer.
3. Ask About Safety and Training
This one is non-negotiable.
Newborn photography involves posing tiny, fragile babies in ways that require proper training and genuine experience. Composite poses, bean bag setups and prop work all carry risk if not handled correctly.
Do not be afraid to ask a photographer directly about their training and safety approach. A good photographer will welcome that question.
At Emberwood I am university trained, currently completing a Diploma of Photography, and have completed specific baby safety handling courses. Every session is approached with your baby's safety and comfort as the absolute priority. If something does not feel right for your baby on the day we simply do not do it. Your baby leads the session, always. There is no pressure, no rushing and no frustration if they need time to feed or settle. That time is built in. I am fully vaccinated and my studio is maintained to the highest standards of cleanliness and hygiene. Before working in photography I spent years as a cleaning supervisor at a local trauma hospital; so when I say your baby is coming into a clean and safe environment, I mean it.
4. Think About More Than the Price
I know cost matters, especially right now. But the cheapest option is not always the best value.
Think carefully about what you are actually getting. How many images are included? What physical products are part of the package? How long does editing take? What happens if your baby is unsettled during the session? Is there time built in for feeding and settling or will you feel rushed?
A photographer who charges less but delivers a small handful of images, rushes through the session and leaves you wanting more may cost you more emotionally than financially. Think about the full experience, not just the upfront price.

5. Choose Someone Who Makes You Feel at Ease
This is something people do not talk about enough.
You are going to be in a room with this person for three to four hours, possibly emotional, likely exhausted, with your most precious person in the world. You need to feel completely safe, relaxed and at ease.
Read their About page. Look at how they communicate. Do they feel warm and genuine or does it feel transactional? Do they seem to genuinely care about the families they photograph?
For me this is deeply personal. Having navigated twenty years of infertility I understand in a way that is hard to put into words just how precious these moments are. Some parents arriving at a newborn session have fought incredibly hard to get there. I photograph every family with that understanding in my heart.
Trust your instincts. If something feels right, it probably is.
6. Know What You Want to Walk Away With
Before you compare packages, get clear on what actually matters to you.
Do you want digital images you can print yourself? Do you want physical products like prints, albums or framed artwork ready to display? Do you want a keepsake film? Do you want just your baby captured or your whole family including siblings and partners?
Knowing what you want before you enquire makes the whole process easier and ensures you choose a package that genuinely reflects what you value rather than just what fits the budget in the moment.
